Church Development
Chuck Denison wrote the book about Presbyterian New Church Development - literally! While serving as Associate for NCD on General Assembly staff he authored, Connectional Church Development: A Handbook for Presbyteries Creating New Churches. He has consulted across the country on over 100 new church starts. Currently Dr. Denison lives in Montana, where he puts half his time into serving The Church at Big Sky (Presbyterian Church USA), a new church start, and invests half time in coaching, consulting, teaching and writing in church development.

Chuck Denison partners with Presbyteries to
  • develop and train an effective Church Development Committee,

  • coach NCD pastors and Executives/Assoc Executives for church development,

  • plan and execute a comprehensive NCD strategy,

  • deal with stalled new churches,

  • find and hire NCD pastors.

    Preaching Clinics and Coaching
Chuck also offers 1-3 day preaching clinics based on his book, The Artist's Way of Preaching, emphasizing creativity and imagery in communicating text and gospel. We experience reading a "Right Brain Bible" and trace both the credible history of reading scripture with imagination and creativity, from the church fathers through to Ignatius Loyola. Then we work with scripture mediations and sermons to communicate with creativity and passion, connecting the images of scripture with the longings of today.

    Coaching can make a difference!
(As excerpted from the Presbyterian Church USA brochure)

National studies done over the last 10 years reveal that church planters who follow no specific training track and develop no plan have a 30% chance for the church to be functioning and viable five years later. Church planters who were trained, coached and develop a plan have an 89% chance for the church to be functioning and viable five years later.

The NCD coach is far more than a friend or support system for the pastor. An NCD coach's primary commitment is helping the NCD achieve vision and goals agreed upon by the pastor, presbytery and lay leadership. Vision is understood to include:
    • Core Values
    • Behaviors
    • Language
    • Culture of the Congregation
    • Potential ministries, target people groups, etc.

Once the vision is intact, with realistic and mutually shared goals, then the coach works with the pastor on strategies to reach and fulfill this vision. A coach will:
    • Help clarify these goals,
    • Reach agreements,
    • Focus the pastor and leaders' work on reaching the goals.

You need more than motivation. What you need is effective coaching! You need both insight and advice, delivered at the moment when it is needed the most during initial days of your church start.

Our vision is also that every organizing pastor will have available a trained and qualified coach.

The coach will visit annually with the NCD pastor and leadership - both congregational and presbytery. Following this preliminary visit a contract or covenant is signed between the pastor, coach and presbytery. The coach will be in regular contact with the pastor discussing specific concerns, suggesting strategies and recommending resources.
